Always keep moving forward

Today’s post has nothing to do with WordPress. Instead it’s about my philosophy for life and business, always keep moving forward.

This morning I was walking to my favorite coffee shop in downtown Austin. If you’ve been to Austin lately, you know there’s a lot of traffic and a lot of construction happening downtown. Since I don’t function very well before my first cup of coffee, I have a normal route that I follow. I don’t have to think about where I’m going, I just follow the heard. But this morning I decided to be different and not follow my normal walking route.

I decided to follow the walk signs. I knew which cross street I needed to end at, so I kept following the walk signs until I got there. I didn’t stop to wait, I didn’t follow the heard. I kept moving forward. Instead of it taking 10 minutes to get to the coffee shop, I got there in 7. Not a huge time savings, but early in the morning I’ll take every win I can.

Never stop moving your business forward

This is how I think about business. Always keep moving forward, always keep innovating. There have been times when I haven’t always been positive about the direction I was moving my company. But I know that as long as I keep moving and don’t stop to second guess myself, we’ll come out stronger on the other side.

I’ve talked a lot about how several people questioned my decision to focus Oso Studio only on WordPress. And yes, the first month after we stopped doing Drupal and Joomla development there were a few times I second guessed my decision. It was especially hard when I got a phone call asking about Drupal development and I had to decline the job. Sure it sucked saying no, but I knew it was the right decision for me, my business’s future, and the client.

I kept moving forward with my decision to focus on WordPress and since then it has had a huge payoff. Oso Studio is becoming known as an expert on WordPress and the number of qualified leads has gone through the roof. At the beginning of this year, roughly 20% of my leads were qualified. Sometimes it was budget, sometimes it was a timeline issue. Today, over 80% of my leads are qualified. It’s all because I didn’t stop, I kept moving forward.

Keep moving forward in life

I also believe in moving forward in life. There’s no point in dwelling on the past, you can’t go back and change your decisions or your actions. I used to second guess myself a lot. Not that long ago, I would let the “What if” thoughts control my life and I wasn’t getting anything done.

Over the past year, I’ve learned that making a decision and jumping in feet first is the only way to live. When I moved to Fort Worth after graduation, I spent the first 6 months mentally living in Denton. I didn’t want to be in Fort Worth and it showed in both my work and my life. The day I decided to accept where I was living and make the best of it was the best decision I could have made.

Almost overnight I saw a complete change in the way I approached life. I started looking ahead and making decisions to shape my future instead of second guessing everything. Today, I couldn’t be happier with where I am in life. It’s all because I decided to keep moving forward and to look ahead instead of behind.

Conclusion

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made in life was to change my thought process. When I stopped following the heard, stopped second guess myself, and decided to just keep moving forward, everything changed. Business was better and life in general was better.

So the next time you stop to second guess yourself, remind yourself to just keep moving forward.
